Meet Laura…
“The future of Farming is full of opportunity – more technology and chances for women and young people to come into the agriculture sector. The Yorkshire & Humber Institute of Technology has helped develop my skills, especially in light of the industry always changing."
Laura isn’t from a farming family and originally went to university to study counselling. However, after helping out with a season of lambing, she fell in love with agriculture and embarked on a career change. She spotted a role at a local dairy with the hopes of learning more about the sector and never looked back.
Fully embracing her new direction, Laura was keen to develop her skills as an agriculture professional further and identified the FdSc Agriculture at University Centre Bishop Burton in Beverley, East Yorkshire as a great way to develop her expertise.
She said: “I was really impressed with the access to precision farming technologies that would help me to upskill for my role at the dairy and provide me with wider higher-level agricultural skills for the future. I love that I’m able to study alongside working as well.
“I wish I’d known how many opportunities there are within the industry, whether you’re from a farming background or not. It would be great to see agriculture taught within secondary schools, teaching where food comes from and the job opportunities within farming.”
"Selby College's role in the Yorkshire & Humber Institute of Technology has enabled myself and my fellow course mates to be trained on state-of-the-art equipment. Now I know how automatics, pneumatics, power fluid and mechanisms work and have been able to introduce this knowledge into my day-to-day job - helping me to develop and make improvements to the company I work for."

Peter Chadwick Creative Media Production and Technology
“. . . . (there is) professional equipment here to give me the chance to use this equipment . . . . we are getting an idea of how to use that equipment for when we go forward into the media industry.”

Richard studying HNC Mechanical Engineering
“I was an engineer; I did an apprenticeship in Engineering for 3 years and worked as a Project Engineer. At the end of my career, I thought I wanted to further my skills in engineering and really home in on what I want to do in the future The areas covered in the IoT is greatly beneficial as it does further your skills in a variety of different areas . . . .”

“I work for Barrett Homes as a trainee Quantity Surveyor and to help my development they suggested I undertake the HNC at York College University Centre. This means I’m getting the opportunity to study whilst also working at the same time. Barrett Homes are also funding my education which is great for my career development.”

Charlotte Hitchin BSC (Hons) Agriculture
“This degree has given me the confidence to further my studies abroad in New Zealand where I will expand my knowledge of precision livestock as well as land and environmental management. With all of my new skills, I can meet my ambitions of bringing the family farm into the modern agricultural environment.”
