Here at the Yorkshire & Humber Institute of Technology, we take a collaborative approach to providing high quality STEM education in Yorkshire and Humberside - and to do this, we work with a number of employers across the two regions.

Our mission is to support the economic growth and prosperity of Yorkshire and Humberside, and we do this by working with employers to prepare individuals for work and support their development.

We work directly with three core regional employers - VISR Dynamics, The Edge Hub Limited and ESH Group - but there are also other employers who work with our education partners to shape the curriculum and ensure the future workforce has the skills they need.

So what is a Yorkshire & Humber Institute of Technology employment partner? And what’s the benefit of being one?
How do we work with employment partners?

We work closely with our employment partners to design and develop education provision in STEM subjects, including high quality apprenticeships, training and higher level education.

Our mission is to provide local employers with the skilled workforce that they need, so our employment partners help us to create a curriculum that is not only bespoke to their job roles, but also meets broader sector needs.

Our focus is on STEM industries such as agriculture, digital, engineering & construction and horticulture & animal care, but we also offer courses in other areas including transport, creative, manufacturing, automotive and food & drink. So by working with businesses in these sectors, we ensure our offer meets employers’ needs.

How do employers benefit?

When working with us, employers have the power to shape the minds of the future by contributing to course development and ensuring students receive training that’s aligned with their business needs.

Then, when it comes to hiring from the new talent pool, employers have peace of mind that Yorkshire & Humber Institute of Technology qualified students will add value to their organisation and have qualifications including:

Degrees
Foundation Degrees
Higher National Certificates (HNCs)
Higher National Diplomas (HNDs)
T-Levels
Apprenticeships

Many businesses in the region face challenges when it comes to recruiting highly skilled workers, particularly in areas like operational efficiency, complex problem-solving, digital skills, advanced IT and technical expertise.

The rapid pace of technological change adds to this pressure, as businesses must constantly invest in new technology and ensure their workforce is equipped to make the most of these innovations.

When partnering with us, we enable businesses to express their evolving needs, which allows us to continually adapt our programs to meet the latest demands. This ensures that businesses have access to a pipeline of ‘industry-ready’ talent who have the skills they need to thrive and stay ahead of technological advancements.

Getting involved

There isn’t a ‘one size fits all’ approach to working with us - we collaborate with employers on an individual basis to develop a working relationship that will help us both achieve our goals.

With this in mind, employers can get involved at a level that suits the time, commitment and requirements they have. This could include:

Helping to develop the curriculum
Working on collaborative projects
Hosting and participating in joint events
Offering work experience to students
Providing students with learning resources
Giving conference talks
Offering site tours
Taking part in research

Whether it’s individual entrepreneurs, SMEs or national and international organisations with a regional presence, our industry-experienced professionals can help employers to access a new talent pool.

Together, we can ensure that we are providing a strong STEM skills foundation to support business growth and meet the aspiration for the region to be leading technological advancement.
