The Yorkshire & Humber Institute of Technology - or YHIoT as we’re known for short - was founded in 2019 and is a partnership between education institutions and employers across the region.

Aligned with colleges, universities and employers, our mission is to help the region’s businesses access employees with the skills they need to succeed.

To do this, we work collaboratively with a diverse range of businesses to offer learners across the region an array of tech-focused education opportunities, relevant to the region’s fastest-growing industries.

A national network of IoTs

We’re one of the 12 original Institutes of Technology (IoTs) - which were developed by the Department for Education - and the network has rapidly grown, now having 21 regional IoTs across the country.

IoTs help to provide high-quality, higher-level technical education and training across a range of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) occupations and industries. Whether learners are just starting their careers, upskilling in their current career or looking for a career change, IoTs provide flexible and affordable ways to gain new skills.

Backed by £290 million in government investment, each IoT focuses on one or more specialisms. At the YHIoT, we focus on agriculture, digital, engineering & construction and horticulture & animal care.

All IoTs are committed to identifying future skills needs and supporting technological innovation, to drive economic growth locally and nationally.

Supporting local learners

We provide students of all ages with flexible opportunities to build rewarding careers in businesses that are leading the way in designing and adopting new technologies.

Our education partners offer learners the chance to earn qualifications that combine theory and practical learning, including apprenticeships, Higher National Certificates (HNCs), Higher National Diplomas (HNDs) and Foundation Degrees (FDs).

Working in collaboration with educators and employers

We understand the importance of equipping students with the skills that employers need and we facilitate this through our network of local educators and employers.

Our education partners include York College & University Centre, Selby College, Askham Bryan College, Bishop Burton College, Craven College, East Riding College, Scarborough TEC, the University of Hull and York St John University.

We are also working with regional employers such as VISR Dynamics, Esh Group, The Edge Hub and Network Rail (with other industry collaborations in the pipeline).

Between us, we foster the sharing of knowledge and experience, working on collaborative projects and getting involved with research - which all helps to ensure the best possible learning experiences for our students.

By working together in this way, our educators know that they are playing a crucial role in building a highly motivated and skilled workforce. What’s more, our employers know they can secure a skills pipeline into their sector and that YHIoT-qualified students will add value to their organisation.

How can I get involved with the YHIoT?

If you think that studying a STEM subject is for you, then we’d love to help you to develop your career! To help you decide what you’d like to specialise in, why not take a look at our learning pages?

We’d also recommend taking a look at our education partners’ websites to find out more about what they have to offer.
