Looking for further education that combines academic and workplace skills to set you up for future career success? Then a foundation degree might just be the course for you.
A foundation degree is one of many qualifications offered by Yorkshire & Humber Institute of Technology partners, alongside T Levels, Higher National Certificates, Higher National Diplomas and Bachelor’s degrees. Apprenticeships are also available for those seeking to earn money at the same time as learning.
So just what are foundation degrees? And how can you get involved with studying one?
What are foundation degrees?
A foundation degree is a level 5 vocational qualification, equivalent to two thirds of a full Bachelor’s degree. They primarily focus on skills that are of high demand in the workforce, with each module supporting your career post-education.
Foundation degrees were designed in conjunction with universities, colleges and employers, and come in two forms: courses for people already in work and courses for people seeking an entry level into a specific sector of the workforce. They’re graded similarly to something like a BTEC in secondary school, where you can earn either a pass, merit or distinction depending on how well you perform.
How long do they take?
Full-time students can earn a foundation degree with two years of education, or four years for people seeking part-time studies. And if you decide you want a full degree while studying for your foundation, you can continue for a further year to earn a Bachelor’s.
Are they effective?
A study by the Social Mobility Commission found that men aged 29 who attended higher education earn 25% more than those who don’t, and the figure is 50% for women.
What’s more, earning a level 4 or 5 qualification is associated with higher earnings when compared to level 3 qualifications.
