National Work Life Week 2024 takes place between 7th and 11th October and is all about getting people to talk about wellbeing at work and work-life balance. This year’s theme is ‘flexible working’ and discovering what this means to people from all walks of life.

At the Yorkshire & Humber Institute of Technology, we understand the importance of flexible working not only in your career, but also in your education. Our education partners’ courses are accessible to people of all ages, so it is typical for students to balance their home and work lives, meaning that flexibility is a key part of what we offer.

If you’re interested in learning new skills but are worried about how to fit it in around your existing commitments, read on to find out how we can help!
Education provision that meets your needs

We work with seven education partners across Yorkshire and Humberside and they all offer flexible provision wherever possible, to ensure they’re meeting every student’s needs. You may be juggling other commitments and think that studying a further education course is impossible, but you’ll be surprised how flexible it can be.

Many of our students are subject to demands that mean flexibility is critical to accessing learning, whether this is shift work, employment or caring for family members. Factors like this can all impact on people being able to attend college or university so we offer full-time and part-time options, as well as online learning, to improve access.

For many of our qualifications, we also offer individual units in isolation. You may not require the full qualification but specific content or units would meet your needs, so our education partners are always on hand to discuss options like this.

What do Institute of Technology students say?

There are many Institute of Technology students across the country who are studying full-time and part-time courses that suit their work and life commitments.

“I did my degree part-time when I had two children under the age of five years and I worked part-time. It was hard work but as an adult I really enjoyed it, I think I valued it more than if I had been younger. It increased my confidence and it led me back into better paid employment - fantastic!”

“I work for Barratt Homes as a trainee Quantity Surveyor and they suggested I undertake an HNC to help my development. This means I’m getting the opportunity to study whilst also working at the same time.”

“My work/life/study balance is still challenging at times, but I wouldn’t have done anything differently and encourage everyone to think about an apprenticeship.”

How can we help?

No matter what their circumstances, we provide our students with exceptional opportunities to build rewarding careers in businesses that are at the forefront of adopting innovative technologies.

Our provision mainly focuses on agriculture, horticulture & animal care, digital and engineering & construction so, whatever you’re interested in, we can offer relevant training and education using state-of-the-art equipment.

In addition to these subjects, we also offer access to courses in many other exciting subjects with technology elements including transport, creative, manufacturing, automotive and food & drink.
