How to find employees with the skills you need
Posted on 5th December 2024 at 11:47
Many businesses across the Yorkshire & Humber region face challenges when it comes to securing a skills pipeline, especially in STEM industries where skills like operational efficiency, complex problem-solving, digital skills, advanced IT and technical expertise are needed.
But at the Yorkshire & Humber Institute of Technology, we’re on a mission to make this easier for businesses across the region. Read on to find out how.
Tackling the skills shortage
Earlier this year, a report by Hays Recruitment showed that the UK is among the top five countries with skills deficits in the technology, engineering, life sciences and BFSI (banking, financial services and insurance) sectors - so there’s no wonder that businesses are struggling to find people with the skills they need.
And these technical skills shortages also show on a regional level. According to a 2023 report by the Hull & East Yorkshire Local Enterprise Partnership, 84% of businesses surveyed are currently experiencing digital skills shortages and only a third of these can fully access the digital skills training they need.
Alongside our education partners, we’re working to tackle these skills shortages and meet recruitment targets in the region, by preparing individuals for work and supporting their development and progression within employment.
We specialise in providing training and education in agriculture, horticulture & animal care, digital and engineering & construction, delivering apprenticeships, higher level qualifications and bespoke training.
Bringing together learners, education providers and employers
We help businesses find employees with the skills they need by bringing them together with education providers across the region. In doing so, we can understand their needs and encourage them to contribute to course development.
Through their input, we can ensure that students receive training aligned with their specific needs and that course development is directly influenced by real-world demands.
We incorporate practical industry experiences into the curriculum, ensuring that programs are flexible and have the ability to adapt to new or evolving workplace requirements. As a result, our students are equipped with the skills they need to thrive and stay ahead of technological advancements.
When working with us, businesses have access to seven colleges across the region - York College & University Centre, Selby College, Askham Bryan College, Bishop Burton College, Craven College, East Riding College and Scarborough TEC.
Through the work of this collaborative network, employers know that students with a Yorkshire & Humber Institute of Technology qualification will add value to their organisation and that each college is creating a skills pipeline directly into their sector.
What’s more, employers can meet students directly by giving conference talks and offering site tours or work experience - helping to build relationships with potential future employees.
Taking the first step
We work with businesses all across the region - from large corporations to SMEs - and, between us, we foster the sharing of knowledge and experience. We do this by working on collaborative projects and getting involved with research, which all helps to ensure the best possible learning experiences for our students.
And your business can get involved too, at a level that suits the time, commitment and requirements you have. This could involve working on collaborative projects, hosting and participating in joint events, providing students with learning resources or taking part in research.
Whatever level of involvement you choose, you can play a part in shaping the minds of the future and providing a strong STEM skills foundation that supports business growth.
